Patricia Montoya was born and raised in Medellin, Colombia and currently lives in San Diego, CA. She began making videos in New York City during the 90s. Her first works are the product of an era characterized by the impetus to represent, which was informed by a sense of urgency, identity, and belonging inspired by ActUp, the music and cultural movement of Hip-Hop, the text of African American authors such as Audre Lorde, June Jordan, James Baldwin and Bell Hooks, among others. The 90s broke the silence, and video was the vehicle for her voice — a poetic expression of images displaying the city and text tracing her personal experience.  Since then, she has produced videos that traverse issues of migration, memory and identity through lyrical explorations of text, dialog, theatricality, and the depiction of intimate human relations within the context of urban landscapes.

Patricia holds a Master in Fine Arts from the University of California, San Diego and an Master of Arts in Media Studies from New School University. She has shown her work in numerous film and video festivals in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

 

 

Patricia Montoya nació en Medellin, Colombia y ahora vive en San Diego, CA. Empezo a producir videos en la ciudad de Nueva York en la decada de los 90s. Sus primeros videos, son el producto de una epoca caracterizada por un impetu represenatitvo inspirado por el sentido de urgencia, pertenencia e identidad movilizados por ActUp, la musica y movimento cultural del Hip Hop, los textos de autores afroamericanos

como Audre Lorde, June Jordan, James Baldwin y Bell Hooks, entre otros. Los 90s rompieron el silencio, y el video fue, para Patricia, el vehiculo inicial de su voz, una forma de expresion poetica con imagenes que mostraban la ciudad y texto que describia la experiencia personal. Desde entonces, Patricia produce videos que tienen que ver

con la memoria y los efectos personales de la emigracion a traves de exploraciones del texto poetico, la teatricalidad, el dialogo, las relaciones humanas intimas y el paisaje urbano.  Patricia completo su maestria en artes visuales en la Universidad de

California, San Diego y tiene un Master en Media Studies de New School University. A presentado sus videos en varios festivales de cine y video en Los Estados Unidos, Canada y Mexico.
